Water Treatment Plant Operator – 1, 2, 3 and 4

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Water Treatment Plant Operator controls treatment plant machines, equipment, and water additives to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use.

1. *Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant
2. *Controls addition of chemicals (chlorine, ammonia, sodium hydroxide, lime, etc.) into water
3. *May adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.
4. *Monitor and control electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate water flow;
5. *Operate agitators and valves within various water treatment processes
6. *Control pumping of purified water into the distribution system to maintain adequate supply and pressure
7. *Clean sedimentation basins and backwash media filter beds
8. *Repair and maintain machines and equipment
9. *Collect and analyze water samples for various parameters to confirm adequate treatment processes
10. *Maintain necessary records and documentation
11. *Regular travel between work locations on base may be required
12. Perform other duties as assigned

• Must possess applicable New Jersey Public Water Treatment System License (T1, T2, T3, or T4) as required;
• High School diploma or GED required;
• Minimum experience as per licensing requirements per NJ DEP (1 year to 10 years) depending on level of license;
• Good communication and interpersonal skills necessary to build good client relationships and to work well in a team-oriented environment as well as independently;
• Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities;
• Ability to follow established safety rules, to maintain a safe environment, adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions, and use the appropriate PPE
• Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills

CERTIFICATES REQUIRED: Must maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record while in this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

• Lifting materials up to 35 pounds
• Bending and stooping
• Climbing ladders

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed at a customer’s location in an office, shop, or in an outdoor environment. Employees may be required to work in confined spaces. Employees may also be exposed to toxic and/or hazardous chemicals, noise from construction environment and equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.

• High School or trade school diploma is required; an Associate's Degree is preferred.
• 2+ years of experience in a Water and/or wastewater treatment facility operation and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of educa-tion and experience, preferred.
• New Jersey W2 and/orT2 license or ability to receive through reciprocity a must.
• A valid New Jersey Class D motor vehicle operator's license with a tanker endorsement within 90 days of employment.
• Working knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods, equipment, materials, and tools employed in the operation' and maintenance of the Water and Wastewater Treatment, Collection and Distribution systems.
• Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in water and wastewater treatment work.
• Knowledge of computer applications.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply instructions, drawings and specifications for work assigned.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other personnel, and the general public.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

General Description:

Under direction, this position is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the
department’s water and wastewater system consisting of fourteen (14) pumping stations, nine
(9) wells, four (4) storage tanks and eleven (11) pressure regulators. Performs other related
duties as required.
Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:
 Shift Operators are responsible to oversee the MTUD SCADA system, well operations,
regulators, storage tanks, treatment operations, distribution system, sewer collection
system, sewer pump station and all related equipment.
 Operators perform system rounds, special projects, various system O&M, emergency
response, customer complaint calls and response, emergency and regular mark-outs.
 Performs other routine and on-call duties as assigned.
 General knowledge of wastewater pumping stations, sewer collection system, well
operations, chemical treatment, hydraulics, chemical pumps, plumbing, SCADA controls,
moors, regulator operation, distribution system O&M and basic math required.
 Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying
temperatures and climatic conditions.
 Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment.
 Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the
duties of this position.
 Physical conditions adequate to perform required tasks, including ability to lift loads of
greater than 50 lbs.
 Withstand to frequently work in adverse weather conditions.
 Applicants must possess a valid CDL Class B (CDL Class A with N Endorsement preferred).
 Three (3) years of experience and two (2) NJDEP Licenses or one (1) level two NJDEP
 Associate’s Degree especially in environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering
technology preferred.
 Wastewater experience and NJDEP higher collection system licenses preferred.
 Welding, electrical, mechanical and instrumentation skills preferred.
Candidates must reside in New Jersey unless otherwise exempted by law and are required to

Sewer Plant Operator - Educational Testing Services

Job Description:

Assist in managing the following activities:

  • Perform various laboratory tests using measuring and laboratory equipment to determine quality of effluent in order to meet all New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
  • Complete, analyze and submit on a timely basis, water sample test data for all required reporting to Government Regulatory agencies.
  • Anticipate changes in plant load and weather conditions: determine causes of treatment imbalance and initiate mechanical system or chemical application adjustments to avoid plant overload and bacterial imbalance.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on plant equipment such as lubrication and adjustment.
  • Accompany and advise state inspectors, visitors and construction contractors during frequent state inspections, operational problems, redesign sessions, and plant function tours.
  • Perform duties normally associated with other trade areas including the general cleanliness and appearance of equipment and physical surroundings of the sewage plant.
  • Obey departmental and OSHA safety rules.
  • Increase awareness of safety and security thereby reducing our exposure to accident and incidents that negatively impact our ability to achieve business excellence.
  • Operate ETS vans and/or trucks in a safe and timely manner. Inspect automotive vehicles to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Establish, implement and monitor methods of inventory control. Order and reorder necessary supplies and equipment by initiating purchase orders and providing the necessary follow-up on all orders.
  • Maintain inventories of laboratory chemicals and supplies and reorder as necessary.
  • Maintain all records required regarding water and waste water treatment operations: report all concerns immediately to the Senior Sewage Operator.
  • Use Facilities Center and other corporate systems to maintain employee time records, performance management, work orders, budgets and communication.
  • Increase customer satisfaction by increasing speed of service, lowering costs to the customer, and improving customer relationships.
  • Work with other trades to effect completion of construction and repairs within time frame. Encourage improvement and efficiency in other employees.
  • Adhere to ethical standards and comply with the laws and regulations applicable to your job function.

Required Experience:

Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • A New Jersey State Sewage Plant Operator license S-2 and a New Jersey State Sewage Collection System license C-2 is required.


Three years of sewage treatment equipment operations and maintenance experience is required, of which three years must include laboratory experience in testing of water and waste water.

Wastewater Collection System Operator - Hanover, NJ
The Hanover Sewerage Authority in Whippany NJ is seeking qualified candidates for the full time position of Wastewater Collection System Operator.  Responsibilities include operation and maintenance of various sewer cleaning and CCTV inspection equipment and associated collection system activities such as manhole frame resetting, utility one call mark-outs, sewer installation inspections, completion and submittal of various reports and inspection of commercial and industrial grease interceptor equipment.  Additional duties include general housekeeping and upkeep of all assigned areas and equipment as well as treatment plant maintenance activities.  Availability for emergency response for sewer blockage remediation, repairs and other activities is mandatory.  Candidates must possess a High School Diploma and a valid NJ driver’s license. Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver License with N endorsement is required.  Candidates must be proficient in math, reading and writing and must be able to communicate effectively.  A minimum of three years of previous experience in wastewater collection system operations is required; possession of NJDEP operator S or C class licenses is preferred but not required.
