The New Jersey Water Association uses data obtained from New Jersey Geological Survey (NJGS), and Bureau of Safe Drinking Water (BSDW) Geographic Information Systems to create site specific maps for each community water systems wells and surrounding area. The delineations of Well Head Protection Areas (WHPA"s) is one component of the WHPP. The WHPA is the area from which a well draws it"s water within a specified time frame. Once delineated, these areas become a priority for efforts to prevent and clean up ground-water contamination. This "lay of the land" is a way to visualize the capture zone for each well and to understand how far reaching these area can be. Further information can be obtained by utlizing excisting GIS information that New Jersey Water has available. In special circumstances the groundwater specialist will use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to obtain new or update old information. Our currently GPS technology allows for sub-meter accuracy which conforms to NJDEP Data Collection Standards.
