This seminar will help participants to select the right testing protocols to monitor and manage water and wastewater treatment processes. To teach how the right method can be chosen, this combination interactive lecture and test method demonstration examines the six basic testing methodologies available to water and wastewater operators, (Gravimetric, Colorimetric, Titrimetric, Turbidimetric, Electrometric, and Nephelometric), and then explores the test method selection process.
Instructor:
Mike Harrington holds certifications in water, wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment, is a Certified Environmental Instructor (CET) and has operational as well as manufacturer work experience. Course Description:
This program explores the most common mistakes water and wastewater systems make using sodium hypochlorite and liquid-based de-chlorinating agents, and much more. The course will compare purchasing versus on-site disinfectant generation, and high-strength versus low-strength hypochlorite. Sulfite de-chlorination, vitamin C, hydrogen peroxide, and other de-chlorinating methodologies will be discussed. Participants will learn the importance of measuring delivered hypochlorite/de-chlorinating agent strength and rates of deterioration, and learn how to measure hypochlorite and dechlorination agents using hydrometers, refractometers, weight measurements and simple chemical tests. Learn how valuable simple pump dose calculations can be to minimize and maximize residuals, and why it is important to verify all pump settings via routine calibrations. This course will also explore chemical handling, safety, and some little-known precautions to take when storing and using liquid- based chlorination and de-chlorination compounds.

This seminar will analyze the uses of membranes in water and wastewater treatment processes. Generic membrane structures and functions will discussed, and membrane processes and applications for use in both water and wastewater will be explored in depth. This course will demonstrate why membranes are fast-becoming accepted technology to achieve high water quality in today's fast-paced regulation-driven enhanced treatment. Additionally, membranes may be the "Best Available Technology" for enhanced nutrient removal in treated wastewater effluents. This 1-day ICS and NIMS workshop will help water and wastewater utilities to better understand ICS, integrate with other first responders within an expanding ICS structure, and implement NIMS concepts and principles that will help utilities provide mutual aid and assistance to one another.
ICS, or the Incident Command System, is a standardized, on-scene, all hazard incident management concept. ICS allows its users to adopt an integrated organizational structure to match the complexities and demands of single or multiple incidents without being hindered by jurisdictional boundaries.
NIMS, or the National Incident Management System, is a consistent nationwide template that enables all government and non-governmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. NIMS requires all agencies to use ICS when responding to incidents. The ICS/NIMS training will cover: • ICS basics • Unified and Area Command • The five principles of NIMS • Mutual Aid and training will cover: • ICS basics • Unified and Area Command • The five principles of NIMS • Mutual Aid and Assistance.
Small, medium and large water and wastewater service providers are considered first responders and should attend this training.

Often the job requires entering dwellings or other buildings with no knowledge of what is going on inside the building. Clandestine Labs normally are sites for creating powerful illegal drugs, but they have also been found to be locations for bomb-making. Recent incidents in our region and our proximity to city centers and other areas that are known terror targets make this an issue of vital importance. Uninformed people can endanger themselves, as well as many others, by not knowing what the visible evidence means. This course teaches how to spot potential trouble and how to respond.
Instructor:
Brendan Tobin has been a firefighter for more than 25 years with training in a wide variety of fire and rescue techniques on the local, county, state, and federal level. He has been teaching "Hidden Drug & Bomb Labs" for the past few years after being trained in the program at a FEMA facility in Anniston, Alabama. Brendan also works in our industry, handling safety, training, equipment operation and maintenance programs, and more for Jet Vac Inc. where he has worked since August of 2006 after spending 1996 to 2006 as a safety and engineering consultant in the auto industry.
